St. Francis Cathedral

St. Francis Cathedral was constructed of volcanic tuff stone (quarried about twelve miles east of Baker City) as were many of the prominent buildings erected in the city during the early 1900s. Ground was broken in 1905, and the building was completed three years later. The Catholic Diocese of Baker, established by the Pope in 1903, included all of Oregon east of the Cascade Mountains.
