A century of growth and evolution is preserved in more than 100 buildings. Some are simple, some elegant, some grandiose; each has a story to tell.

Visit the tree-shaded yard of the 1872 home of the town’s first mayor. Picture Syreus McCord trudging down a dusty street, his clothes smudged with soot and grease from his blacksmith shop. A door of his house bursts open, and several of his twelve children scramble out to greet him.

Stroll down Main Street, past the festooned Victorian buildings, and imagine bustle-skirted ladies pausing at the shops to inspect the latest merchandise from the East.

Outside the 1927 Hotel Baker, listen for shouts and cheers from a political convention of bygone years.

This guide takes you to many of the more than 100 buildings in the Historic District. At each location, you’ll find additional information about the building’s architecture, occupants and place in Baker City’s lively history.

Along your way, listen for the echoes of the past... the ring of the blacksmith’s hammer... the rumble of wagons loaded with mining equipment... the trumpet of the band...
